Bachelor of Arts (English)
Objectives
1. To enable students to master the four English skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-and to communicate effectively and appropriately in a variety of social and cultural contexts;
2. To equip students with knowledge of linguistics, literature and culture necessary for their thorough understanding of the English language;
3. To provide students with a basis in skills related to careers or further education;
4. To develop students' analytical and critical skills to foster logical thinking.
Degree Structure
The program consists of 138 credits, which are comprised of:
General Education Courses 30 credits
Specialized Courses 102 credits
Free Electives 6 credits
Degree Requirements
1. General Education Courses
Students must take 30 credits of General Education courses as outlined by the
university.
2. Specialized Courses
2.1 Major area courses 78 credits
2.1.1Courses in the Department of English
2.1.1.1 Compulsory courses
Students are required to take 48 credits of the following compulsory courses:

2.1.1.2 Prescribed electives
Students are required to select 1 writing course (3 credits) from the following courses:

2.1.1.3 Electives
Students are required to select at least 8 courses (24 credits) from the courses listed
below. At least 4 courses (12 credits) must be 400-level courses. Students may also
choose from any remaining prescribed electives (2.1.1.2) not already taken.

For all courses in 2.1.1, a minimum grade of C must be obtained in the prerequisite
courses before students can take upper-level courses.
2.1.2 Course outside the Department of English
2.1.2.1 Compulsory course
Students are required to take LG 211 (3 credits).
2.2 Minor or Electives 24 credits
Students may select one of the following study plans:
2.2.1 Minor
Students may choose a minor program offered by another
discipline of study at Thammasat University, subject to that
department�s conditions.
Or
2.2.2 Electives
Students may take 24 credits of courses offered by other
departments in the university.
3. Free Electives 6 credits
Students may choose to take any courses in Thammasat University as their free
electives, including foreign languages offered as General Education courses with the
exception of English courses.
4. Minor Program
Students wishing to minor in English must take at least 24 credits from the following list:
4.1 Three compulsory courses (9 credits)

4.2 Two 200-level English courses (6 credits)
4.2.1 Take two 200-level courses offered by the Department of English.
Or
4.2.2 Take one 200-level course offered by the Department of English and one
200-level course offered by the English Language Institute.
4.3 Three 300-level English courses (9 credits)
4.3.1 Take three 300-level English courses offered by the Department of English.
Or
4.3.2 Take two 300-level English courses offered by the Department of English and
one 300-level English course offered by the English Language Institute.
Associate Degree Program
Students with a minimum accumulation of 96 credits are entitled to an Associate Degree in English under the following
conditions:
5.1 Having maintained a grade-point average of 2.00.
5.2 Having been registered as a full-time student for at least 5 semesters.
5.3 Having fulfilled the University General Education requirement of 30 credits.
5.4 Having completed at least 60 credits of specialized courses in the Department of
English from the following list:
5.4.1. At least 45 credits of the following courses:

At least C in prerequisite courses must be obtained before taking upper-level courses.
5.4.2 Three credits of a compulsory course outside the Department of English: LG 211.
5.4.3 At least 12 credits of other courses as follows:
5.4.3.1 Other courses offered by the Department of English.
At least C in prerequisite courses must be obtained before taking upper-level courses.
And/or
5.4.3.2. Minor courses or electives, subject to the department�s conditions.
5.5 Having completed at least 6 credits of free electives.
Notes
1. Students taking English courses and exempted from required English courses
through testing or permission from the English Department will be given credit for the
exempted courses and will not be required to take any elective English course in
substitution for the exempted course in order to complete all credits required in the
curriculum.
2. Students who are exempted as indicated in (1) are not allowed to enroll in the
exempted courses.
3. Students taking EG 221, EG 231, EG 232, EG 241, and EG 242 may apply for
exemption from those courses in order to be eligible to enroll in more advanced
courses if they meet the following conditions:
3.1 To be exempted from EG 221, students must have a valid SAT score of 500 or
above in the Verbal Part or a valid IELTS score of 5 or higher in the Reading Part
(Academic) or a valid TOEFL score of not lower than 56 in the Reading Part
(Paper-based) or not lower than 22 in the Reading Part (Computer-based) or not
lower than 21 in the Reading Part (Internet-based) or not lower than 350 in the
Reading Part (TU-GET).
3.2 To be exempted from EG 231, students must have a valid SAT score of 500 or
above in the Verbal Part or a valid IELTS score of 5 or above in the Writing Part
(Academic) or a valid TOEFL score of 4 or above in the Writing Part (TWE)
(Computer-Based) or a score of 21 or above (iBT).
3.3 To be exempted from EG 232, students must have a valid IELTS score of 6 or
above in the Writing Part (Academic) or a valid TOEFL score of 5 or above in the
Writing Part (TWE) (Computer-Based) or a score of 23 or above (iBT).
3.4 To be exempted from EG 241 and EG 242, students must have a valid IELTS
score of 5 and 6 respectively in the Speaking and Listening Parts (Academic) or
a valid TOEFL score of 15 and 21 respectively in the Listening Part (iBT), and 22
and 25 respectively in the Speaking Part (iBT).
3.5 Students who want to be exempted from those courses must officially enroll in
those courses in the semester they apply for exemption, and it must be done within
2 weeks after the first enrollment, and 2 weeks after the second quota announcement.
Students must also provide the Department with original copies of recent test results
(not more than two years from the test date) and proofs of official enrollments of
